Southern Brahman Group's Annual Production Sale and
educational seminar were a huge success!
The Southern Brahman Group held an educational seminar on November 17, 2007.
Dr. Jim Sanders, Texas A&M University, gave an overview of the history of the Brahman breed beginning with the first major importation from India in 1906. He also discussed the impact of early individuals and how their genetics were used. The rest of the program dealt with technologies in place and things cattlemen could expect in the future concerning feed efficiency testing, DNA testing, sexed semen and how these tools could be utilized in the future.
Speakers included Dr. Gordon Carstens with Texas A&M; Dr. R.E. Hunsley, leading cattle authority; Nancy Grathwold with Bovigen LLC and Gustavos Toro with Sexing Technologies. These speakers outlined many cutting edge practices cattlemen could implement and also addressed other practices that are coming in the future.
Members of the Southern Brahman Group held their annual fall production sale, November 18, 2006 in Caldwell, Texas.
The 200 plus head offering drew 49 buyers from seven states as well as interested cattlemen from Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and Colombia. Overall the sale grossed $534,500 on 222 lots to average $2,408. A breakdown of the averages includes 86 open heifers at $2,265 each; 63 bred heifers sold for an average of $2,903; 20 bred cows averaged $2,220, 55 pairs averaged $2,789 and seven bulls averaged $1,314.
Milton Charanza, Jr. was the sale manager, while Leo Casas, Jr was the auctioneer. The sale featured the genetics of Diamond A Ranch, Dime Box, Texas; McKenney Farms, Terrell, Texas; Bailey Brahmans, Riesel, Texas; RB Ranch, Laredo, Texas; Satterfield Ranch, Palestine, Texas; 3-S Brahmans, Caldwell, Texas; Jeffrey and Diane Brown, Coldspring, Texas; Kelly Ranch, Beaumont, Texas; and Kallion Farms, College Station, Texas.
Kallion Farms consigned the high selling open heifer, bred heifer and bred cow in the offering. Miss Kallion 515, a daughter of JDH Mr. Alton Manso 562/5 was the high selling open, generating a final bid of $4,250 from Cedar Bluff Farms, Benton, Louisiana. The sale topper carried GeneStar rankings of a 3 for marbling and 2 for tenderness with a 14.2 ribeye area measurement.
Miss Kallion 533, a daughter of Register of Renown Sire, JDH Karu Manso 800 sold for $4,000, also to Cedar Bluff. 533 had a 11.8 ribeye area measurement, with two stars each for marbling and tenderness. She sold safe in calf to Kallion 402.
Kallion’s lot 10, a daughter of +Mr V8 287/5 “Superstroke”, an international champion, drew a final bid of $4,000 from Silent G Ranch, New Waverly, Texas. She sold safe to JDH 17/4 for a heifer calf. Her GeneStar numbers included a 2 for marbling and 1 for tenderness.
A consignment from 3-S Brahmans topped the pair offering as Reese Ranch, Normangee, Texas paid $4,100 for the daughter of Mr. HCC 975/0, a reserve international champion and her April show heifer prospect, sired by K-C 999 Winchester Magnum, an international champion bull.
McKenney Farms saw one of their bulls top that portion of the offering as Clay Nohavitz, El Campo, Texas bid $2,300 for the son of +Mr. V8 901/4, who was also an international champion.
